St Helena is one of the remotest islands on Earth.
A subtropical paradise where the mountainous terrain and microclimates create an astounding diversity of landscapes, all within a few minutes drive.
The island is a breath of fresh air in today’s world, boasting clean air, a sparkling ocean environment, a safe community (pop. 4,000) and a lack of reliance on modern technology (mobile service was only introduced in 2015).
It is an off-the-beaten-track, bucket-list destination unlike anywhere else.
On St Helena, there is so much to explore.
The island’s dramatic terrain and untouched nature offer a rugged playground for adventurous exploration. From the lush, fern-shrouded peaks of the interior to the stark, volcanic cliffs of the rocky coastline, the landscape is perfectly suited for high-energy discovery.
A hiker’s paradise. Find a whole world’s diversity of hikes, climates and scenery, all within a short drive. Explore in peace and tranquillity, with few or no other hikers on the path. Take on all 25 Post Box Walks, and boast your collection of all 25 stamps.
Saints have a deep-felt connection to the ocean, and it’s easy to see why. Clear, warm waters (19-25°C.) Sea life including dolphins, whale sharks, turtles, small and big-game fish, and rays. Eight accessible shipwrecks to explore. St Helena’s marine environment is world-class. Why wouldn’t you jump in?
St Helena’s natural environment is of global importance. 500+ species of plants and animals found nowhere else on Earth. Britain’s last natural cloud forest. A world’s diversity of landscapes and microclimates in a tiny space. Fresh, clean air. A lack of light pollution, allowing world-renowned stargazing.
As one of the only mid-Atlantic islands, after its 1502 discovery St Helena was a vital stopover for ships traversing the South Atlantic. Plus, its remote location made it an ideal place of exile. This created a true melting pot of history and heritage, totally unique in the world, apparent and readily accessible all across the island.
One of St Helena’s greatest attractions is its unique culture. A heart-warmingly friendly population of fewer than 4,500. A true melting pot of the peoples and nationalities that have transited the island over the past 500 years. Saints are deeply connected to nature, extremely prideful in their island, and hold strong family and community values. In such a remote, tight-knit community everyone knows everyone, and the driver of each car waves to each other as they pass.
