With sea turtle nesting season running until the end of October and the prime months being August and September, the Dominican Republic’s northeastern coast is drawing attention as a genuinely undiscovered destination for independent, responsible travel with a wildlife focus.
Situated 90 minutes from Punta Cana, Miches is emerging as one of the Caribbean’s most compelling destinations for hiking, trekking and independent adventure travel, developed responsibly with substantial conservation work underpinning the wider tourism offering.
Genuinely Undiscovered Terrain
Miches is a lesser-known area with rainforest mountains running straight down to a largely untouched coastline. At its heart is Laguna Limón, a freshwater lagoon that can be explored by boat or kayak through mangroves home to dozens of bird species.
Inland, multiple trekking routes lead to waterfalls including Salto la Jalda and El Cocuyo, while the natural pools at Caño Hondo are reached on foot through the forest. The Montaña Redonda viewpoint, accessed via a short hike, offers 360-degree views over the lagoon, rainforest and Atlantic Ocean and its famous swing is a popular Instagram spot. Nearby, Los Haitises National Park is known for its mangroves, limestone mogotes (tall formations shaped by the wind and rain) and cave systems containing prehistoric rock art created by the Dominican Republic’s original inhabitants, the Taino.
Back towards the sea and it’s the three species of turtles that nest in Miches that draw attention. ProTortuga is an organisation that partners with the Dominican Ministry of Environment that monitors 57km of local coastline with nightly patrols, safe relocation to nurseries and protected hatching, all designed to monitor the turtles and support their growth. Over three years nesting events have increased by over 65% and illegal poaching has decreased more than 97% since community nurseries were introduced. In addition, 7,593 eggs have been saved leading to 3,018 hatchlings released. Over 1,000 local people including fishermen, residents and tourism workers have been trained and employed as coastal monitors educating the local community on the economic value of the turtle population through tourism more info here
