Gibraltar has announced its popular ‘Calentita’ food festival will return on July 8th 2023.
The Gibraltar foodie event of the year will kick off the summer with a variety of food tents, live entertainment, cooking displays and dances.
The festival was named after Gibraltar’s national dish ‘Calentita’ translated as the warm one, an oven baked dish that looks similar to pizza without the topping and served hot. It originally appeared in the 16th century, when Genoese migrants brought the recipe to Gibraltar. It is believed that the dish was named by street vendors who would shout the name in hopes to sell the calentita still warm and fresh, the word transferred its meaning from temperature to food.
Today Calentita shares its name with a food festival that takes place every year on the streets of Gibraltar in celebration of the destination’s multi-cultural society, celebrating its place in the world, with stalls providing all sorts of favourites delicacies from Moroccan ‘pinchitos’ Torta de acelgas, a type of spinach pie and pan dulce, as well as food from all over the world and places with links to Gibraltar
