Gibraltar's own brand distillery opens

Gibraltar Tourist Board

Spirit of the Rock is a new artisan gin distillery opened in Gibraltar. Its unique Gibraltar blend is called Campion.

The flower, Campion (silene tomentosa), was thought to be extinct but then miraculously rediscovered in 1992 by a local botanist. Found growing wild nowhere else in the world other than Gibraltar, this valiant little plant has been selected as a key ingredient to offer a unique gin distilled in Gibraltar after it.

Its seeds are now held in the seed bank at Kew Gardens so its future is secure, it is also being propagated in the Alameda Gardens in Gibraltar.

The company actively supports the use of single use plastic, supporting and encouraging recycling locally offering a bottle & stopper return discount for repeat customers. Unlike most distilleries the cooling water is recycled saving more than half a million litres of fresh water a year.

Packing a punch at 48% ABV its first copper stilled Gin had to be a London Dry Gin to honour the 300 year bond with the United Kingdom. The original Campion recipe combines the essential botanicals Juniper, Coriander, Orris and Angelica with classic liquorice, cardamon, cassia bark, clove and orange. However, the addition of Lemongrass, Rose, Carob and Campion gives this London Dry Gin a deep, well rounded and sophisticated note.

Spirit of Gibraltar will shortly be offering historic distillery tasting tours and gin blending courses.
