Sir Viv Richards and Chris Cowdrey officially launched the Lord’s Taverners 65th Anniversary Tour at ‘The Cat, the Cow and the Swann’ dinner held last night at Edgbaston. Sir Viv announced that the Lord’s Taverners, the UK’s leading youth cricket and disability sports charity, will travel to Antigua and Barbuda for their 65th Anniversary Tour from 12 -16 October.

Cricketing royalty such as Mike Gatting OBE and Andy Caddick, ex England cricketer and former leading English wicket-taker, will join celebrities such as Nick Hancock and Jonnie Irwin for five days of pro-celebrity cricket to be played on the stunning beaches of Antigua and Barbuda, as well as in the famous Sir Vivian Richards Stadium. The full VIP squad line-up for the tour will be announced in the coming weeks.

Sir Viv commented;

“The devotion of Antigua and Barbuda’s cricket fans is unrivalled, it’s an island where cricketing history has been made and therefore the perfect destination for the Lord’s Taverner’s 65th Anniversary Tour. There’s nowhere better to be than Antigua and Barbuda when the cricket’s in town! The Lord’s Taverner’s have always had close links to Antigua and Barbuda having raised £25,000 towards the restoration of the island’s St John’s Anglican Cathedral just last year. I believe very strongly that all young people should have access to sport so the Lord’s Taverners is a charity very close to my heart.”

International Cricket Tours is the official tour operator partner and is offering fans the-once-in-a-lifetime chance to watch iconic players and celebrities bowl and bat whilst soaking in Antigua and Barbuda’s sparkling charm. The package starts from £1,699 per person, inclusive of accommodation at the luxurious Sugar Ridge hotel, which hosted the England cricket team last year during their West Indies tour, and return flights from Gatwick with British Airways. The package will also include a cocktail reception with the players, a catamaran day trip, a night time 20/20 cricket match at the Sir Viv Richards Cricket Ground and beach cricket at the Valley Church Beach with a post-match BBQ.

Antigua and Barbuda, a twin-island state in the Eastern Caribbean, is a year-round world class cricket destination. With 365 beaches and an impressive national stadium, there’s no shortage of space to enjoy the Caribbean’s favourite pastime.

Cherrie Osborne, ‎Director of Tourism UK & Europe, Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority commented;

“The people of Antigua and Barbuda are fiercely passionate about cricket and believe it’s the best place in the world for enthusiasts to indulge in their love of the sport. We are thrilled to host the Lord’s Taverners and welcome cricketing legends and fans alike to the gem of the Caribbean for what’s set to be an exciting five days.”

Paul Robin, Chief Executive, Lord’s Taverners commented;

“Celebrity cricket matches have played a big role in Lord’s Taverners fundraising since the charity was founded in 1950. Following our dinner honouring Sir Viv Richards at Lord’s last September – which raised £70,000 for the charity and £30,000 for the St John’s Anglican Cathedral Restoration Project in Antigua – this special tour to Sir Viv’s homeland is the perfect way to commemorate our 65th anniversary and see how the Lord’s Taverners has helped support the local community. Funds raised by the tour will help us give even more young people a sporting chance and we are hugely grateful to Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority and International Cricket Tours for giving us this fantastic opportunity.”
