PGA Tour heads to Dominican Republic for new event in March 2018 For the first time in its history, a big circuit event will be played in the DR

The PGA Tour is taking its talents to ... south of South Beach, announcing Tuesday that it will have an event in the Dominican Republic starting in 2018. The Corales Punta Cana Resort & Club Championship will be held from March 22-25 next year and will be played the same week as the WGC-Dell Match Play. As an opposite-field event, golfers won't get into the Masters for winning, but they will still be able to rack up some FedEx Cup points and partake in a $3 million purse.

The Corales Punta Cana Resort & Club Championship was a Tour last year but will enjoy elevated status in 2018. It is taking the place of the Puerto Rico Open, which has yet to find a new spot on the PGA Tour schedule (or a new tour altogether), according to Ryan Herrington of Golf World.  "Hosting the very first PGA Tour tournament in the Dominican Republic is an honour both for Punta Cana Resort and Club and for the Dominican Republic itself," said Frank Rainieri, the resort's chairman and founder.

"This is an affirmation of the exceptional golf facilities we have down here, and we are thrilled to expose the international golf community to the Dominican Republic. The Tour's Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship debut in 2016 was a standout moment on the calendar for us and we are thankful for that experience. We look forward to another outstanding tournament on the Tour in May and then to grow our relationship with the PGA Tour beginning in 2018."
